Biography

History makers, risk takers, champions and humanitarians. All those words can be used to describe seven-time Canadian Pair Champions, two-time World Champions and three-time Olympic medalists Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, who celebrated the fruits of their labor at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, winning gold and bronze medals.

All the more amazing, when Duhamel and Radford teamed up in 2010, both thought their competitive skating careers might be over. Eight years later, they had achieved more than they ever imagined. From a record-setting seven Canadian titles to landing the first-ever throw quadruple Salchow in Olympic competition to Radford being one of the most high profile openly gay athletes in PyeongChang, this duo has left an indelible impression on the sport.

“Canadian pairs history is filled with so many greats, so to just be included among them is unbelievable,” said Duhamel.

In the two years leading up to the Games, Duhamel and Radford struggled at times, but they persevered, hitting their stride in the weeks heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“Regardless of the medals in PyeongChang, it was the performance,” said Duhamel. “To live that and to have medals on top of it was beyond my wildest dreams.”

All the more incredible is that the team competition and the pairs event happened back-to-back. “We managed our energy and our focus like never before,” said Duhamel. “We worked so hard on our mental focus, our emotional focus and we showed up more prepared than ever before.”

When Duhamel and Radford announced their retirement from competitive skating on April 25, 2018, they did so with a sense of pride and satisfaction.

“The success Eric and I had as a team is a true testament to old-fashioned hard work,” said Duhamel. “That’s what I love most about sport.”

The next year was a total whirlwind as they skated all over the world—performing in shows in South Korea, China, Japan and Australia as well as taking part in three Canadian tours, two with Stars on Ice. At the conclusion of the 2019 Stars on Ice Canada tour, Duhamel was four months pregnant and ready for nesting. Being a mother has always been part of her life plan. She and husband Bruno Marcotte, who was also the pair’s coach, moved to Burlington, Ontario so they could be closer to her family and coach their teams in Oakville, Ontario.

“Bruno and I are excited to embark on this new journey,” said Duhamel, who gave birth to daughter Zoey in October 2019. “Being close to my parents, my sister and her kids, that’s important. We wanted to start a skating school together ourselves. There’s no big pairs training center in Ontario, so we felt that’s a really good place to build up a pairs program.

“I really love coaching, and I’m looking forward to doing more of it in the future and going to competitions with our skaters.”

The 2020 Stars on Ice show marks the return to touring for Duhamel and Radford. “I love to skate. I love to perform,” Duhamel said. “I want to keep skating for as long as I can while I can with a baby.”

Duhamel’s off-ice passion is health and nutrition since becoming a vegan in 2008. She has studied holistic/naturopathic health and become a certified holistic nutritionist. A long-term goal is to open a vegan café and hold nutrition workshops and classes. She is already working with her skaters on nutritional guidance as part of their off-ice training program.

“I want to increase my work in the nutritional field, particularly with athletes, but other people as well,” said Duhamel. “I understand everybody needs something different in their lives and in their bodies. It’s very individualistic. I love the idea of figuring out nutritionally what’s going to make you feel the best.”

While Duhamel and Marcotte have relocated to Ontario, Radford has remained in Montreal and his life is taking on new dimensions. He has begun coaching with renowned pairs coach Richard Gauthier and working on choreography, including the 2019-20 free skate for the Canadian pairs team of Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud.

“I had amazing, different coaches along the way, and I found it very interesting and stimulating learning about their different techniques,” said Radford. “I always thought I could be a good coach. I have been loving it. I find it invigorating. I love seeing the development. Especially, working on the little details like the intention behind a movement that I feel I didn’t quite understand until the end of my career. That is something I love trying to instill and teach to the athletes that I work with, who are all high level competitive skaters.

“I also want to do more choreography. I love the creative side.”

Qualifying for the Games in Sochi, Russia provided a sweet payoff for years of hard work and perseverance. Stepping onto Olympic ice for their first practice session was a joyful moment in their lives and proof that not giving up during times of disappointment and frustration is the path to success in life. Radford admitted jumping up and down like a kid. Four years later in PyeongChang, he and Duhamel were on a mission to win gold in the team event and a spot on the podium in the pairs competition.

“Anything can happen in the moment,” said Radford. “You go into every competition envisioning everything going perfectly and it rarely ever does. I don’t think we’ve ever been more prepared for a competition than we were in PyeongChang. We were skating very consistently in practice and we were just at a very calm, prepared and experienced place compared to the 2014 Olympics.

“The biggest thing for Meagan and I was a relentless daily pursuit of excellence,” he added. “We were always pushing ourselves that little bit more. That’s how you build character, and that character is what leads to having a great performance in the moment at the Olympics.”

He also loved the sense of unity on the Canadian team that led to gold in the team event. “I was so invested,” he said. “It was a crazy and unique experience for a figure skater to have.”

Radford has embraced being a visible figure in the LGBTQ community since coming out as gay in late 2014 and sharing his story with OutSports.com, a website that covers LGBTQ issues in sports. For his thoughtful openness, in 2015 Icenetwork.com named Radford its Person of the Year. On July 11, 2019, he married former Spanish ice dancer Luis Fenero in Spain before 130 friends and family.

“I’ve stood on the top of the Olympic podium, but getting married was the best time of my life and the best moment of my life,” said Radford. “In that setting with beautiful music. People kept coming up to us and saying, ‘It was perfect.’ It was amazing. I love being able to call him my husband.”

In the fall of 2019, Radford appeared on the TV competition show Battle of the Blades, partnering American hockey player Amanda Kessel. All competitors on the show earned money for a charity of their choice, and Radford selected Egale Canada, an LGBTQ advocacy organization. Duhamel made an appearance as a judge.

For Radford, music continues to be a passion. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, he and Duhamel skated their short program to “Tribute,” original music composed by Radford, the first time an Olympic skater competed to his own composition. Renowned arranger Louis Babin orchestrated the composition.

After those Olympics, “Tribute” helped the fight against cancer when Radford partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society with 50% of all net sales for downloads directed to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society. Radford subsequently composed Patrick Chan’s free skate music for the 2016-17 season. Recently, in addition to skating, Radford played the piano during holiday shows in Germany.

There are more musical projects coming up. He has started working with a producer on an album and he’s composing a piece for the opening ceremony of the 2020 World Figure Skating Championships to be held in Montreal. Duhamel and Radford will also perform.

They treasure their time touring with Stars on Ice Canada, which includes two U.S. shows this spring.

“We’re very excited to do the tour again,” said Radford. “We’ve always said we’d perform as long as the opportunities are there.

“Knowing through all the ups and downs—there were so many times where I could have given up, but I didn’t—I went for it and I made it happen,” he added. “That gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment that I will carry with me regardless of all the ups and downs that are to come in life.”
